Freeman Archive

The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) is excited to announce the acquisition of the prestigious Joseph S. Freeman Archive, consisting of 1-million+ images spanning almost the entire history of (mainly) American motorsports. A perfect resource for fans, authors, publishers and auction houses, the Joseph S. Freeman Archive includes the work of 30+ shooters and collectors, like Bob Harmeyer, David Knox, Peter Helck, Dennis Torres and Richard George, covering Indy Cars, NASCAR, Formula 1, Sprint Cars, IMSA, SCCA, Le Mans, Drag Racing and more.

The approximately one-million photographic images include most major formats: digital, slides and negatives, prints, drawings, illustrations, even some rare stereoscopic slides.

Joe Freeman began racing in 1970 and over time developed into one of the world’s leading automotive writers, historians and vintage racers and collectors. He started racing vintage cars in a 1931 American dirt track sprinter and has competed at major events all across the country. Freeman is a longtime board member of the Larz world-renowned Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA, including six years as the Museum’s President. He’s been a longtime judge of the Racing Car Class at the Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance since 1997. Freeman founded Boston’s award-winning Racemaker Press in 2006, where he began to amass this amazing collection of images. Placing his archive permanently at the Motorsports Hall of Fame makes the spectacular visual history of racing available to future generations.
